At The Watches and Beyond Blog
Recently, my dear friend had a baby. Everyone was really excited about it as it was her first and her baby shower was ridiculously insane. There were onesies coming out the wazoo and more baby socks and bottles than the child will ever be able to use. Yet, there was one gift at the baby shower that I didn’t quite understand.
It was a gift from the soon to be grandpa (the mother’s father.) It was a Longines watch. Now, it might just be my sensibilities but gold watches do not usually have a place in the hands of a small, drooling baby. I mean, they can’t even speak yet, let alone tell time. It was explained to me later that this was a tradition in the family. When someone had a baby, the child was given a timepiece in a classic style that would always be in fashion. The watch could grow with the child and when they were ready to appreciate it, it was already an heirloom with a vast history.
I thought this was a wonderful tradition and thought of how I would feel if I had a beautiful Longines watch that I’d had since birth. It’s a beautiful gift that will grow with you.
