“You never actually own a Patek Philippe, you merely hold it for the next generation.”  The iconic tagline for Patek Philippe captures perfectly the essence of their Calatrava watch, famously known as “the most handsome watch ever made”. The Calatrava is a treasured heirloom in many families, passed down to future generations with pride. A true dress watch, the Calatrava is perfectly suited for life’s most important events. What is it about the Calatrava, other than its timeless beauty, that propelled the timepiece to this pedestal above its peers?

The Calatrava’s design is streamlined and simple. Its key characteristics are the sharp dials, wide, flat, rounded face, and firm leather wristband. The watch is most commonly purchased in yellow gold. Additionally, the timepiece is worn by both men and women, a novelty amongst fine watches. This is a key factor in the watches’ success: because the piece can be passed down from father to daughter, or from mother to son, you’ll often find Calatravas  passed down as family heirlooms.

Created in 1932, the Calatrava was quite ahead of its time. The watch featured a sleeker, more subtle design than the chunky, heavy watches popular in its time. But the roots of the name “Calatrava” go much farther back. 1887 was the year the Calatrava became the official symbol of the Genevan manufacturer. The cross was the emblem of the Order of the Calatrava, a military order that received papal approval after saving a Spanish castle from Arabic invasion. This had great significance to the watchmaker, a devout Catholic. When the watch debuted in 1932, Patek Philippe christened this most famous watch model with the name of the cross. As any true horologist knows, the small symbol is often found on the watch case and/or dial.

Our inventory includes a vast selection of discount luxury watches, coming from makers from all over the globe. Every now and then, we feel it is important to educate our customers on select brands that we carry. Having some background knowledge on certain makers can help one as they make their decision to invest in a luxury time piece. Today we’d like to take a look at Patek Philippe & Co.

Patek Philippe & Co. has been around once 1851, founded in Geneva, Switzerland. It’s notable traits include being one of the front runners in the industry, producing some of the most complicates mechanisms in it’s class.  Some even consider this brand to be one of the most prestigious in the world.  Patek Philippe, the founder, pioneered the split-seconds hand, the minute repeater, and the chronograph in watches. We carry a large selection of time pieces from this brand via our online store. Take a look at the Calatrava below:

Get a Watch with a Bit of Color for Spring

redvalAlthough it is still cold out, spring will be here before you know it. A new wardrobe is necessary for spring and that includes a watch. Spring is a warming opportunity to choose a colorful, bold watch. Almost every fine watch brand offers some kind of color options, though some are better known for chromatic selection than others.

A good place to start, if you are not looking for a specific brand, is by typing a color into our watch search tool. Maybe you are looking for a subtle but still spring-appropriate forest green watch. Perhaps you want a louder, hot pink watch for weekend strolls through the park. Think about the context of where you will be wearing the watch.

Will you be outdoors a lot come spring? If so, there are many great sports watches that come in multiple colors to handle the wear and tear. If you have more interest in a watch to wear out and about, search watches by fashion brands like Gucci and Valentino. More traditional brands like Tag Heuer and Patek Philippe have reserved color options.

Spring is all about rebirth and revitalization. Celebrate the season with a new watch–after a hard winter you have earned it!

Gold Watches by Patek Philippe

gold watchGold is a beautiful and valuable material. Although we see it everywhere there is only enough gold in the world to fill two Olympic sized swimming pools. To put in another way all the gold bricks in the world could only build about 33% of the Washington Monument. The price of gold has been rising for years. You should get your hands on some gold watches before the price of gold climbs again.

A great example of gold watch craftsmanship from Patek Philippe is the Patek Philippe Grand Perpetual Calendar. This watch tells you the time, day, date and lunar phase. It also adjusts for Leap Year.  It has a Swiss automatic self-winding movement. The face is beautifully designed to display a lot of information but be clear and never feel cluttered. This watch is pricey but well worth it.

Patek Philippe Gondolo Platinum & Gold is another beautiful selection from Patek Philippe that features both gold and platinum. I love this watch’s art deco inspired style. The platinum and rose gold look great together. Square watches are in right now, though a piece as beautiful as this is timeless.

Make sure to get your hands on a gold watch before the price of precious metals spikes again!
